The NYU Center for Disability Studies is pleased to welcome Destiny as our 2021-2022 Center RA.
Welcome to Destiny Lopez, the NYU Center for Disability Studies RA for 2021-2022. Destiny is a Multimedia Storyteller and advocate for accessible and inclusive media. She holds both a Master of Arts (’20) and a Bachelor of Science (’16) in Media, Culture and Communication from NYU Steinhardt. Inspired by her experience as a woman with a hearing loss, Destiny spent her graduate studies conducting global research on media accessibility for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. Her award-winning thesis, Accessible Sound: Creative and Integrated Media Accessibility for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, proposes three ways to make film, television and live theater more accessible to the D/HoH. She was the 2014 recipient of The Loreen Arbus Disability Awareness Grant and a 2020 NYU Provost Global Research Institute Fellow at NYU London. As a Strategy Scholar for the NYU at Weber Shandwick Master in Residence Program, Destiny offered her expertise on accessibility to major brand campaigns including the launch of “Joss”— American Girl’s first doll with a hearing loss. Her op-eds and research have been featured and mentioned in many publications including Teen Vogue, Bustle and I-D Magazine.
