Book Launch and Discussion: Bodyminds Reimagined

October 4, 2019 @ 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm

An image of author Sami Schalk who is smiling and wearing bright lipstick and glasses, against a white brick wall.

Join us in celebration of Dr. Sami Schalk’s (University of Wisconsin-Madison) Bodyminds Reimagined: (Dis)ability, Race, and Gender in Black Women’s Speculative Fiction. The book traces how black women’s speculative fiction complicates the understanding of bodyminds—the intertwinement of the mental and the physical—in the context of race, gender, and (dis)ability. Bridging black feminist theory with disability studies, Schalk demonstrates that this genre’s political potential lies in the authors’ creation of bodyminds that transcend reality’s limitations.

A reception will follow.

Moderator: Mara Mills (C0-Chair NYU CDS)

Co-sponsored by: The Center for the Study of Gender and Sexuality, NYU; and NYU Africana Studies.
