SUMMARY:Fire Through Dry Grass (2023\, 89 minutes) screening and discussion with film directors Andres “Jay” Molina and Alexis Neophytides\, moderated by director of Proclaiming Disability Arts\, Simi Linton
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, March 1 5:00-7:30 PM\n19 University Place\, New York University Theater 102\n  \n\n  \n \nA film poster with the title “Fire Through Dry Grass” in bold yellow handwritten block letters. An image of 5 Black and brown men in wheelchairs\, looking straight into the camera\, is above the text. They are on a dark gray background that has layered yellow drawings intricately arranged: a brick building\, a man in a mask\, varied excerpts of poetry\, and a seagull\, to name a few. \nThis award-winning documentary chronicles the devastation experienced by residents of a NYC nursing home during the coronavirus pandemic. The film takes viewers inside Coler\, on Roosevelt Island\, where director Jay Molina lives with his fellow Reality Poets\, a group of mostly gun violence survivors. Instead of history repeating itself on this tiny island with a dark history of institutional neglect and abandonment\, Fire Through Dry Grass shows these disabled Black and Brown artists refusing to be abused\, confined\, erased.\nEvent is free and open to the public.\nWe ask all attendees to wear masks as a result of COVID. \nVenue is wheelchair accessible. ASL and CART will be provided. Film is open captioned. \nAudio description available on request. \nPlease include accessibility needs as they relate to the event in the registration\, or email msf440@nyu.edu. \n\n  \nCo-Sponsored by NYU Center for Media\, Culture & History\, Proclaiming Disability Arts\, NYU Department of Cinema Studies\, NYU Kanbar Institute of Film\, Television and Media.

SUMMARY:Shrinkage And Activist Affordances\, With Arseli Dokumaci And Michele Friedner
DESCRIPTION:Join us as Arseli Dokumaci and Michele Friedner engage in a conversation about shrinking worlds and activist affordances. Following a brief viewing and discussion of Arseli’s ethnographic videos showing activist affordances in action\, Arseli and Michele will facilitate and open up a conversation about the immense amount of effort and creative work disabled people do everyday\, building inhabitable worlds from the ground up.\n  \n\nEvent is free and open to the public. \nASL and live captions will be provided. \nPlease email accessibility needs as they relate to this event to msf440@nyu.edu. \n \nBook cover split into two. On top is a black rectangle with the book title\n“Activist Affordances: How disabled people improvise more habitable worlds”. Below is an image of a hand (in a close-up) holding a spoon innovatively. \n\nArseli Dokumaci (she/hers) is a Canada Research Chair in Critical Disability Studies and Media Technologies\, and an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication Studies at Concordia University. Her scholarly and creative work lies at the crossovers of disability studies\, performance studies and medical anthropology. Arseli is the director of Access in the making (AIM) Lab\, and the author of Activist Affordances: How Disabled People Improvise More Livable Worlds (Duke UP\, 2023). \nPhoto credit\, Roi Saade 2022.\n  \nHello\, this is Arseli\, an olive-skinned woman in her early 40s\, gently smiling at the camera. I’m outside with a jumper on\, where the grass is still green\, and the trees have leaves. \n  \n  \n  \n\nMichele Friedner is a medical anthropologist in the University of Chicago’s Department of Comparative Human Development. She works mostly on deafness and disability in India and is the author of Valuing Deaf Worlds in Urban India (2015) and Sensory Futures: Deafness and Cochlear Implant Infrastructures in India (2022) as well as a number of journal articles and commentaries. \n  \nPhoto by Joe Sterbenc\n  \nA white woman with wavy reddish hair and a grey blazer awkwardly holds a small reddish dog. The woman is smiling at the camera while the dog looks unhappy and is possibly glowering.
